Rain creates new ruins in Pompeii

40-foot stretch of garden wall ringing an ancient house in Pompeii gave way this week after days of torrential rain, the latest structure to collapse at the popular archaeological site.

A few weeks ago, Italy was embarrassed when a frescoed house, the Schola Armaturarum, where gladiators prepared for combat, was reduced to a pile of stones and dust in seconds. Earlier this year, another building, the House of the Chaste Lovers, collapsed in Pompeii.

More than 3 million tourists traipse Pompeii's main streets each year. Officials said no one was injured in the latest collapse, which is in an area off-limits to visitors.
