Consider it the drop of the other shoe. Spirit Airlines just announced it will charge passengers for carry-on luggage beginning August 1.
Under the new system, passengers will be permitted to carry one personal item aboard for free that will fit under a seat (a pocketbook, small backpack). Those who wish to bring an additional item onboard to store in the overhead compartment will be charged $30, payable online in advance or at the check-in counter. Those who wait to declare their carry-ons at the gate/during boarding will be charged $45.
Spirit Airlines is the first carrier to charge passengers for carry-on lugguage. Items excluded from the restrictions include coats, reading material, food to consume during the flight, diaper bags and various assistive devices.
