Jaunting around the city for the day just isn't the same if you're lugging (or wheeling) a suitcase or other baggage around. When I was in London last year, I searched for somewhere to stash my luggage so that I could make the most of my last half-day in the city, knowing I wouldn't have time to return to the hotel en route to the airport. There was such a locker facility near a main train station, and it would have served nicely if I were taking the train to the plane. Though it didn't work out for me on that particular trip, locking up your belongings can make sightseeing so much more enjoyable, even if you've just gone shopping and want to spend the rest of the day package-free.
Schwartz Travel has opened storage facilities for tourists as well as daytrippers near the two major train stations in NYC. You can rent a locker, coat check or even mini storage by the hour, day, week or month at three locations in the city:

2. 34 W. 46th Street, between 5th and 6th avenues, convenient to Times Square and Grand Central Terminal. Open Sunday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. until June 1, then daily from 8 a.m. - 11 p.m.
