Ulster jail inmate dies; cops probe cause

Police are investigating the death of an inmate at Ulster County Jail on Tuesday morning.

Mark Morgan, 43, of Route 9W in Highland, died early Tuesday morning, the Ulster County Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

Morgan arrived at the jail in Kingston about 3:30 p.m. Monday after being arraigned in Lloyd Town Court, police said. He had been arrested on an outstanding bench warrant on charges of felony drug possession, misdemeanor drug possession and misdemeanor forgery, police said. He was sent to jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $30,000 bond.

All newly arrived inmates undergo a full medical screening, Undersheriff Frank Faluotico said. As a result of the examination, Morgan was placed in the jail's infirmary and stayed there until his death about 1 a.m., he said.

The investigation is ongoing pending an autopsy and toxicology reports, police said, adding that there appears to be no evidence of foul play. The autopsy likely will be conducted Wednesday, Faluotico said, although the results of toxicology tests may take several weeks.

The New York State Commission of Corrections was notified, police said.
