Wadler to receive achievement award

Dr. Gary Wadler, a Manhasset-based physician and one of the original authorities on performance-enhancing drugs in sports, will receive the Nassau County Sports Commission's lifetime achievement award at the organization's annual "salute to champions" awards dinner tonight.

Wadler, a 69-year-old resident of Sands Point, is a charter member of the World Anti-Doping Agency, which polices drug use in international sports, and currently is chairman of WADA's prohibited-list committee. His 1989 book, "Drugs and the Athlete," was a seminal work in its field and earned him the International Olympic Committee's "president's prize."

Tonight's event, at the Chateau Briand restaurant in Carle Place, also will recognize outstanding local college and high school athletes and will induct three into the Nassau County Hall of Fame: 1996 Olympic hurdles champion Derrick Adkins, a Malverne High School grad; former pro quarterback Jay Fiedler from Oceanside and Ed Westfall, original captain of the expansion Islanders in the early 1970s.
