Thomas Costarelli threw a no-hitter on 102 pitches with 12 strikeouts, two walks and one hit batsman while another reached on error to lead No. 5 East Islip baseball to a 1-0 win over host No. 4 West Islip in the first round of the Suffolk AA playoffs Tuesday. Gavin Veltman’s two-out single in the top of the sixth scored pinch runner Dylan Casani for the run, who stood in after Brody Cross’s single. Chris LaMacchia then hit a single to put Casani in scoring position before Veltman drove him in for the win. East Islip (14-5) will travel to No. 1 Hauppauge (17-3) on Thursday, May 16, at 4:30 p.m.

Miller Place 3, Center Moriches 2: Alex Strickland struck out nine batters over seven innings and gave up no earned runs to lead No. 5 Miller Place past No. 4 Center Moriches in the opening round of the Suffolk Class A playoffs. Joe Fallon went 3-for-3 with a run scored and Nick Frusco went 1-for-3 with a solo home run for Miller Place (15-6).

Farmingdale 5, East Meadow 2: Joe Tagliavia, Jake Dunn and Andrew Dillon threw a combined one-hitter with no walks and nine strikeouts to lead No. 3 Farmingdale (15-6-1) to win the series over No. 6 East Meadow (10-11-1) in the first round of the Nassau Class AAA playoffs. Jordan Welch went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Tagliavia, who accounted for five of the nine strikeouts, went 2-for-3 with a double.

Carey 9, MacArthur 3: Jayden Gigante went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored to lead No. 9 Carey past No. 1 MacArthur in game two of the Nassau AA quarterfinals. Dom Ruggiero added a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning. Christian Boswell got the win for Carey (16-7), allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits over 5 1/3 innings pitched. Matteo Tufano came in with one out and the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, striking out a pair the runners. Tufano later completed a five-out save to force game three at MacArthur (17-5) on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Long Beach 3, South Side 2: Hunter Stadtman hit a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to score Steven Misrok and send No. 5 Long Beach (17-5-1) to the Nassau AA semifinals after sweeping No. 4 South Side (10-10-1). Christian Parisa pitched eight innings, striking out 15 while allowing three hits and two runs. Troy DeFrancesco earned the win, retiring two batters in a hitless, scoreless ninth inning. Misrok and Alonzo Espinet had two hits each.

SOFTBALL

Islip 4, Shoreham-Wading River 0: Lauren McSweeney struck out 16 across a complete game, including her 600th career strikeout, to lead No. 2 Islip over No. 7 Shoreham-Wading River in first round of the Suffolk Class A playoffs. Peighton McKenna went 2-for-4. Keira Jantz had two hits and drove in McKenna for the final run.

Sachem East 1, Sachem North 0: Olivia DeRose struck out six in a complete game to help No. 3 Sachem East defeat No. 6 Sachem North in the first round of the Suffolk Class AAA playoffs. Cameron Buckstein singled in the bottom of the seventh and stole both second and third before Angelina Cornand hit a sacrifice fly to score Buckstein for the win.

Herricks 4, South Side 3: Megan Lee had a two-run home run and went 2-for-3 in No. 5 Herrick’s win over No. 12 South Side in the first round of the Nassau Class AA playoffs. Devin Shah went 3-for-4 and had two singles, including the game-winning RBI.

West Islip 4, Eastport-South Manor 0: Emily Bouros pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out 14 to earn the win for No. 2 West Islip over No. 7 Eastport-South Manor in the first round of the Suffolk Class AA playoffs. Alex Gitomer-Dawson drove in Christine Lombardi with a ground out. Penelope Knoop singled to drive in Emma Taliercio-McNamara, and Cadence Olsen drove in Knoop with a triple.

BOYS LACROSSE

Lynbrook 5, Wheatley/Carle Place 0: Caiden Lung put up a shutout with 15 saves behind a stout defensive performance to earn the win for No. 7 Lynbrook over No. 10 Wheatley/Carle Place in the first round of the Nassau Class C playoffs. Bennett Votano had three goals for Lynbrook (10-7).

GIRLS LACROSSE

Division 9, Bethpage 8: Nevaeh Motes scored the game-winner for Division (10-5) with 1:09 left in overtime to earn the win in a Nassau Class C play-in game. Angelina Weinert and Hannah O’Connor had three goals each. Juliana Reyes had 14 saves.

MONDAY’S GAME

St. John the Baptist 15, Our Lady of Mercy 1: Sophia Virgilio had five goals and two assists to lead No. 1 St. John the Baptist over No. 2 Our Lady of Mercy in the NSCHSAA Class A championship game. Finals MVP Virgilio also tallied her 100th point of the season. Violet Harrison had five goals and an assist, Nora Healy had three caused turnovers and five ground balls and Gabby Cimino had seven draw controls.
