St. Dominic's Victor Frederick strikes out eight in win over Chaminade

Almost a year ago, Chaminade baseball handed St. Dominic pitcher Victor Frederick his first loss of the season in the playoffs. On Tuesday, the senior sought to find a measure of revenge against their rivals.
Frederick struck out eight batters and allowed two hits through six scoreless innings in St. Dominic’s 5-3 NSCHSAA win over Chaminade Tuesday afternoon at the Charles Wang Athletic Center. Frederick also went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk.
“I had some control issues in the beginning, but I think I cleaned that up throughout the game,” Frederick said. “I just attacked them with fastballs and, if I saw them sitting on something, I slipped in a breaking ball to keep them off balance.”
It wasn’t a perfect outing. The Bayhawks had one hit through three innings and, while they held Chaminade to the same, they also committed three errors in that span.
“I have to lock in a little bit and give a little extra,” Frederick said. “That’s how we play here, we play as a team.”
The St. John’s commit allowed one hit after the second at-bat of the game, which was a bunt. The game remained scoreless, though, until Frederick, Jordan Ynoa and Tom Garrett managed to load the bases in the fourth for Joe Galeotafiore. The junior ripped a two-run single into leftfield to score Ynoa and Pete Kokkoris, who subbed in for Frederick.
One inning later, Ynoa added an RBI-double deep to centerfield, scoring freshman Dom Muccia to the team’s roaring delight. Ynoa advanced to third base on an error.
“I was pumped up,” Ynoa said. “The bench keeps us in the game.”
Senior Matt Cruz drove in Ynoa on a single, and Frederick plunged the dagger in by scoring Cruz before striking out two of three Chaminade batters in the sixth. Chaminade senior Peter Beisel ripped a two-run double to right field in the seventh against senior reliever Andrew Ripp, reaching home on the next at-bat before Bayhawks freshman Ray Kim sealed the game with a leaping snag at third base.
For a 12-1 team that sits 8-1 within the NSCHSAA, it’s clear that the postseason will again be in the Bayhawks’ future. Being able to overcome errors could prove important down the line for head coach Joe Fusco’s team.
“We’ve been playing pretty clean baseball, not making many mistakes,” Fusco said. “Today we made a few more but we were able to rebound pretty quick and capitalize on the opportunities we got.”
