Former Newsday Pulitzer Prize winning reporter Dennis Duggan joined Newsday
Tom Manton, son of an Irish farmer who came to America and
took up plastering, has been in charge of Queens politics for longer than
anyone else since Queens was incorporated into the city in 1898.
There have been colorful county leaders such as Matthew J. Troy (1971-74)
and Donald R. Manes (1974-86), but no one has served as long - 18 years - in
that powerful job...
