In 2001, Afghan sculptor Amanuiiah Haiderzad watched on
television from his home in Elmhurst as Taliban followers destroyed the
historic Buddha statues that had been carved into a mountain centuries ago.
"I was crying as I watched," he told me. "This was a sad event, not only
for my country but for the world."
