Over the years, technology has created an extremely mobile workforce, fueling the growth of telecommuting, or teleworking as it's often called.

Last year alone, the sum of all teleworkers -- employees, contractors and business owners -- hit 33.7 million, a 17 percent jump from 2006, according to a study by Scottsdale, Ariz.-based WorldatWork, a human resources association.
