There are loads of exciting new food offerings at Jones Beach and we sampled most of it. Just across the sand from the “regular” concession area is a tent sheltering SmorgasBar, a collection of hip, happening food vendors that represent a delegation from the cult Brooklyn food market Smorgasburg. Enjoy fresh-shucked oysters, hand-cut fries, shockingly fresh nachos, artisanal sausages and more.

Right now there are some monster soft-shell crabs for sale at Jewel of the Sea in Woodbury. And not just any crabs. One of Long Island’s most experienced fishmongers, “Captain” Bill Mieschberger, just joined Jewel (owned by Lou Novello), and he brought with him a secret source in Freeport. This fisherman sets traps in the bay, hauls in the blue-claws and keeps them in tanks. As soon as they shed...Read more »
Wolffer Estate Vineyard welcomes summer with a glass of rose and a "taste of Provence."
The winery recently has released two rose wines. The 2013 Wolffer Rose ($17) finishes dry and has apple and melon notes. Winemaker Roman Roth's 2013 Summer in a Bottle Rose ($24), handsomely bottled and loaded with summer fruit, delivers a harvest of strawberry and peach.
The wines are sure to complement...Read more »
Magic Taco Corp. is up and running in Islip Terrace. The place is co-owned by two chefs, Steven Scalesse, recently profiled in Newsday’s All-Star chef series as chef-owner of Tullulah’s in Bay Shore, and Devin Delgado, who cooked at Tullulah’s with Scalesse for years.
“I grew up in Islip Terrace,” said Scalesse, going on to describe a little coffee shop next to an Italian ice place that...Read more »

New to Glen Cove is Manka Peruvian Kitchen, situated in the strip mall storefront space that last housed Rosticini Italian Grill. Look for it behind Wendy's.
Chef-owner Boris Torres, who came to the U.S. from Peru as a child, grew up in the restaurant business. His family still owns El Anzuelo Fino, a Peruvian restaurant with branches in both Jackson Heights and Woodhaven. But instead of going...Read more »
The subject of the latest email blast from West East All Natural Bar & Bistro is emphatically in caps: NO MORE SODA. This from executive chef Jay Jadeja, who calls soda “a predominant contributor to the obesity and health crisis in our country.”
Jadeja, who was profiled in Newsday's All-Star Chefs series, adds that he and his wife, Raquel, haven’t had soda in over a decade, and their children...Read more »
Youth is served at Georgica in Wainscott.
New in the pondside restaurant's sixth season is executive chef Greg Grossman, age 19.
"It's been fantastic," said Grossman, who describes his cooking in the Hamptons as "eclectic American." The chef, who was spurred to his profession via a cookbook by revered Spanish chef Ferran Adria, also sufficiently "bothered" Chicago superchef Grant Achatz...Read more »
OK, here we go again. Another Italian restaurant rant.
Last night, a colleague and I had a terrific meal at Luigi Q in Hicksville. Among the highlights: Oyster Bay Cove oysters both raw and "casino'ed" with bacon and, instead of bread crumbs, a vegetable brunoise; linguine Giovaninna, simply, sparely dressed with capers and cherry tomatoes; deep-fried Italian peppers with sea salt and olive...Read more »
