BROOKLYN - The Newtown massacre has prompted some Brooklyn officials to closely examine gun legislation.
Local elected officials gathered in front of City Hall this afternoon to discuss the legislation.
City Councilmembers Jumaane Williams, David Greenfield, Lew Fidler and Vincent Gentile were among those calling for more community-run gun buyback programs, stricter gun control laws and more counseling to help identify and treat people suffering from mental disorders.

"If we don't take care of this now, after children who went to an elementary school to learn were slaughtered by assault weapons, I don't know what else it would take for America to fix this problem," Williams said.
The city currently offers a 24/7 gun buyback program at all police precincts. Anyone can turn in a gun and get $100, with no questions asked.
