Paterson may nix new drivers fees if budget gap closed

Motorists may not have to buy new license plates if state lawmakers help Gov. David A. Paterson close this year's $3.2-billion budget deficit.
Responding to a caller to a Syracuse radio station, Paterson said Friday he would revisit the mandate once the deficit was closed and state obligations were met.
Under the 2009-10 budget, motorists must purchase new plates over a two-year period, beginning April 1 as their registration comes due. The plates will generate $130 million for the state.
"I promise to take another look at it," Paterson said. "What I need the public to do is help me get this deficit reduction plan done" by lobbying reluctant lawmakers.
He didn't mention, however, rolling back the new driver's license and vehicle registration fees that took effect on Sept. 1.
