Community description: Capes, ranches and Colonials dominate; other styles include Tudors. The hot topic is a proposed $2-billion downtown revitalization project.

Condos: The Multiple Listing Service of Long Island's Web site has seven listings priced from $249,990 to $375,000.

Co-ops: Start at $60,000. ABC Properties in Manhattan owns half the Cedar Valley Apartment building and completed renovations. Prices range from $78,000 for a studio to $143,000 for a two-bedroom, says chief executive David Lansey.

Apartment rentals: One-bedrooms start at about $1,200 a month. Some 800 affordable units in three apartment buildings are being renovated with the help of Hempstead Town's Industrial Development Agency. Two buildings are completed.

Shopping and services: Conveniences are found along many throughfares, but perhaps the busiest is Fulton Avenue (Hempstead Turnpike), where Super Stop & Shop and Home Depot are located.
