A fire broke out in Wyandanch on Sunday evening at Omni Recycling of Babylon, and a drone was used, for the first time, to give the commander "a different view of the fire scene through the thermal imaging features," the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services said.

The blaze at 114 Alder St. was reported at around 8:21 p.m., the police said.

"The first arriving units were met with heavy fire and began setting up for exterior operations," the department said in a statement.

Referring to the lead firefighters, the statement added: "East Farmingdale Chief Duane Welliver immediately started mutual aiding tower ladders to surround the building in order to put large amounts of water on the fire."

No injuries were reported.

The Town of Babylon has hired an excavator, it said, "to help separate the debris and get to the bottom of the recycling materials."

The company was not immediately available to comment.
