Community Profile

Residents are largely attracted to the high-end hamlet of Manhasset for its proximity to Manhattan - about 17 miles - and its highly regarded school district, local real estate agents say.

This North Shore community also offers one of the best-known medical facilities in the country: North Shore University Hospital, part of the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System.

The "Miracle Mile" on Northern Boulevard is lined with upscale retailers including those in the tony Americana Shopping Center. And Plandome Road, Manhasset's downtown area, offers shops, services, restaurants and a movie theater.

The greater Manhasset area includes an unincorporated section, as well as the villages of Munsey Park, Plandome, Plandome Heights, Plandome Manor, North Hills and a portion of Flower Hill. The area's serene, manicured neighborhoods feature Colonials, Tudors, capes, ranches and some split-levels. Homes in older neighborhoods, such as Strathmore Village and Strathmore-Vanderbilt, dominate the higher price range.

Annual events include the Autofest, where antique cars are showcased; two craft and collectibles shows; summer concerts at the Mary Jane Davies Green; and the Man/Woman of the Year dinner.

A new three-story library is 38,500 square feet. Parks and beaches are nearby, and residents can join private country clubs and yacht clubs. The Onderdonk House, a historic landmark, is open to the public, and the Science Museum of Long Island is nearby.
