Community Profile

Ambitious plans to redevelop 450 acres at the former Pilgrim Psychiatric Center in Brentwood are still in the works. Developer Jerry Wolkoff proposes Heartland Town Center, a mini-city with 9,000 residential units and retail, office and recreational space. Islip spokeswoman Michele Remsen says the plan is undergoing a state environmental quality review.

Brentwood, also home to campuses of Suffolk Community College and Long Island University, is an ethnically diverse community.

Housing stock is dominated by capes and ranches, but there are Colonials, split ranches, high-ranches, split levels, apartments and senior complexes with income restrictions.
