Roadway signs hidden by summer foliage

Signs of the season? At this time of year, they're the signs we can't see.

Many signs for parkway exits have wound up hidden by summer's foliage. We've had a couple of close misses, saved only by a robotic GPS voice announcing "Exit the roadway now."

Trimming along state roads is underway, the state Department of Transportation told us recently. The job involves 730 miles of roadways, so the work is expected to continue into late fall, department spokeswoman Eileen Peters said.

We asked about one specific section of Southern State Parkway — between Exit 16 and the Wantagh Parkway — that drivers had brought to our attention. Peters said that stretch should be finished by summer's end.
