Mets' coach says David Wright's shoulder is still hurting

David Wright and Terry Collins have remained on message, constantly disputing the notion that the Mets' captain still is bothered by a balky left shoulder, one that required a cortisone injection during the All-Star break.

But Mets hitting coach Lamar Johnson apparently went off script, saying that Wright’s power outage by the slugger’s insistence on playing through pain in his left shoulder.

The Yankees added infielder Zelous Wheeler prior to Thursday's 1:05 p.m. game against the Astros. Righthanded pitcher Chase Whitley was sent to the minors to make room on the roster for Wheeler.

David Phelps pain-free for a week

David Phelps, on the disabled list since Aug. 4 with elbow inflammation, made 50 throws from 60 feet and underwent an MRI on Monday.

He was scheduled to see the doctor again Tuesday.

Joe Girardi said after Tuesday’s game that he did not know the results of the MRI because he hadn’t spoken with team doctors.

Phelps said his elbow feels better and he could be back in three weeks.
