Injured A-Rod gets a baby girl

CHICAGO - Alex Rodriguez will not play until tomorow at the earliest, but his strained right quadriceps is not the only reason. Rodriguez's wife, Cynthia, gave birth to the couple's second child - a daughter - Monday night, and he will remain in Miami until tomorrow.

Rodriguez strained his right quad Sunday in the sixth inning against the Orioles. He is considered day-to-day. Manager Joe Girardi said Rodriguez told him he is aiming to play Friday.

"He'll rejoin us Thursday," Girardi said. "I don't know if he'll be able to play Thursday. We'll make that evaluation Thursday to see where he's at."

Girardi said the Yankees hope to avoid putting Rodriguez on the disabled list. Derek Jeter missed a week when he strained his left quad this month. Rain and cold weather may have slowed Jeter's return by a day or two, so Girardi is hopeful that Rodriguez may miss even less time.

The last time Rodriguez went on the DL was in 2000, when he had a right knee strain.

Rodriguez flew to New York after Sunday's game. He underwent physical therapy at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital on Monday before flying to Miami as his wife was in labor. Girardi said he believed Rodriguez got to the hospital just in time for the birth. She weighed 7 pounds, 2 ounces, and the couple has not yet released her name.

In a release through the Yankees, Rodriguez said: "We are thrilled with the birth of our second daughter and the blessing of having two healthy, beautiful children in our lives."
