TORONTO -- Michael Grabner says he felt this move coming on.
Grabner will be a healthy scratch on Tuesday night here against the Leafs, the first time he’s missed a game without an injury or the impending birth of his son since Oct. 9, 2010, shortly after he was claimed off waivers from the Panthers.
“Everybody knows what my role is and I haven’t scored a point in 12 games,” Grabner...Read more »
A few thoughts before the Wings come to town on Saturday and I take off for the weekend -- you’ll be in Jim Baumbach’s capable hands for Saturday night game coverage:
-- Thursday night was a real stinger, and it was evident after the game. Jack Capuano usually tries to zig when everyone else zags, so his mild postgame comments are not a sign of denial. He’s not one to pile on when he sees...Read more »
RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Isles got back to work on Wednesday, trying to erase the bad memories of the second period in Tuesday’s 6-2 loss to the Caps in Washington.
“For me, it was the first time all year I didn’t think we channeled our energy the right way,” Jack Capuano said. “There was a lot of frustration on the bench and I thought it carried over in that period.”
The Isles gave up five...Read more »
RALEIGH, N.C. -- It’s time to ask and break down the following question: What’s wrong with the Islanders?
Let’s dive in.
Is it the goaltending?
Certainly, Evgeni Nabokov has not been good enough at times this season. The difference between what I like to call “Twitter Reality” and “Hockey Reality” is that not every goal in a bad game such as Tuesday’s is the goaltender’s fault....Read more »
WASHINGTON -- Jack Capuano is going back to Evgeni Nabokov in goal on Tuesday here against the Capitals, despite Kevin Poulin’s solid outing in Saturday’s 3-1 win over the Bruins -- and Nabokov’s shaky outing in the 5-4 shootout win over the Senators on Friday.
“You look at the history, Nabby has played well here,” Capuano said of Nabokov, who is 12-1-3 with a 2.09 GAA and .926 save percentage...Read more »
Islanders coach Jack Capuano mentioned earlier this week that he met first-round draft pick Ryan Pulock for the first time at the 2013 NHL Draft, when the Islanders took him with the 15th pick. So you can imagine the unfamiliarity that Capuano has with some of the other prospects at the camp, especially the undrafted invites who are unsigned.
Not only has this camp given him an opportunity...Read more »
Ryan Pulock has only been on the ice for about an hour for his new organization, but already he has developed a reputation. If there’s one thing you his fellow prospects learned about him on Tuesday, it’s that you don’t want to get in the way of his shot.
“He’s a big, strong kid and hopefully you don’t get hit with one of his shots in front of the net,” Brock Nelson said.
Pulock, who...Read more »
Jack Capuano tossed in a little wrinkle to his usual gameday banter, saying the Islanders “have to play almost a perfect game” to beat the Penguins.
“We make one mistake and it’s in the back of our net. They make three or four mistakes and we may still not score,” Capuano said. “I guess I’m not saying perfect, but we have to be close to perfect to be successful.”
Capuano may be exaggerating...Read more »
PITTSBURGH -- Jack Capuano tried to be coy about his lineup changes, but the extra on-ice work of a few Islanders gave away his likely Game 2 lineup.
David Ullstrom appears to be subbing in for Marty Reasoner up front, and Matt Carkner would be in for Thomas Hickey on defense.
Evgeni Nabokov, who took a Jarome Iginla slap shot off his head that broke his mask and was pulled after allowing...Read more »
BUFFALO -- Islanders fans on Twitter let out a collective groan when I posted Jack Capuano’s lineup for Friday night: Eric Boulton remains in the lineup in place of Jesse Joensuu and Lubomir Visnovsky comes out for Thomas Hickey.
Capuano said Visnovsky, who has played 35 of the Isles’ 47 games so far (he missed the first 10 games of the season before he reported, then two more to return to...Read more »
