Palestine Liberation Organization
Three members of the pro-Syrian Amal militia, the first political organization of Lebanon's Shi'ite Muslims, take cover as their comrade opens fire at the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) fighters in Bourj el-Barajneh refugee camp 26 May 1985 in Beirut. In May and June 1985, the Shi'ite Amal militia, and with the assistance of the largely Shi'ite Sixth Brigade of the Lebanese Army, Syria renewed its attempt to prevent PLO leader Arafat from re-establishing a power-base in Lebanon. Most of the estimated 5,000 PLO guerrillas who returned to Lebanon in anticipation of the Israeli withdrawal from the south were thought to be loyal to Arafat. The Palestinian refugee camps of Sabra, Shatila and Bourj el-Barajneh in Beirut were besieged by Amal guerrillas.
