About Paul Robeson

Paul LeRoy Bustill Robeson (April 9, 1898 – January 23, 1976) was a multi-lingual African American film and stage actor, All-American and professional athlete, basso profondo concert singer, writer, civil rights forerunner, pro-union activist, Spingarn Medal winner, Stalin Peace Prize and Phi Beta Kappa Society laureate who achieved far reaching world wide acclaim during his life for his singing, films and outspoken, radical beliefs. Robeson was also a prime target of the Red Scare during the late 1940s through the late 1950s and was under surveillance for well over three decades until his death in 1976, by both the FBI and HUAC for his beliefs in Marxism, his work towards the decolonization of Africa and Asia following World War II, his support of the International Brigades and his vocal efforts to push for anti-lynching legislation under President Harry S. Truman. To this day his FBI file is one of the largest of any entertainer ever investigated by the United States Intelligence Community, requiring its own internal index and status of health file.
