Bolivian boat builder Paulino Esteban poses 25 August 2002 in front of a reed boat in Huatajata, 83 Kilometers (562 miles) north of La Paz. Esteban and his team assembled the reed boat, a design they hope would be capable of carrying eight tons of stone 90 kms (56 miles) across Lake Titicaca in ten days. The University of Wisconsin at Madison, the University of Colorado, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and UMSA, the Bolivian university, are all taking part in the project.
