Vaclav Havel

Former US President George W. Bush, alongside his wife Laura Bush, receives personal papers from the collection of Vaclav Havel, former President of Czechoslovakia, presented by Martin Palous (R), head of the Vaclav Havel Library Foundation, during an event celebrating the successes of dissidents and activists from around the world, hosted by the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Washington, DC, May 15, 2012. The papers will become part of the George W. Bush Presidential Center's Freedom Collection, an archive of documents and interviews about the struggle for human freedom and democracy around the world.

Václav Havel, GCB, CC, (pronounced [ˈvaːtslaf ˈɦavel]) (born October 5, 1936) is a Czech writer and dramatist. He was the tenth and last President of Czechoslovakia (1989-1992) and the first President of the Czech Republic (1993-2003). He has written over twenty plays and numerous non-fiction works, some of which have received international acclaim[citation needed]. He has received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Philadelphia Liberty Medal, and the Ambassador of Conscience Award.
