Often referred to as the "Gateway to Nassau County," the large hamlet of Elmont attracts many first-time home buyers from New York City.
"More than 90 percent of our buyers come from Queens, Brooklyn or the Bronx," said Jerry DiMonti, owner-broker of Century 21 People Services Realty. And with a population composed of 89 nationalities, Elmont has become an unusual suburban community offering a vibrant international culture.
Its biggest landmark - Belmont Park, a 430-acre racetrack - is the largest thoroughbred racecourse in North America and the site of the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the Triple Crown.
The Elmont Public Library recently built a new library cultural center at the site of a vacant middle school on Hempstead Turnpike.
Shops, services and eateries can be found along the area's four main thoroughfares: Hempstead Turnpike, Elmont Road, Dutch Broadway and Meacham Avenue.
Tree-lined neighborhoods feature mostly capes, Colonials and ranches.
The community has a few area parks and two large cemeteries at its center. Residents enjoy numerous annual events including holiday parades.
