Nassau County police are investigating a Saturday afternoon fire on the roof of a storage facility on Old Country Road in Plainview.

The fire, which police said was not considered suspicious, occurred at a Safeguard Self Storage building, where work was being done last week to solar panels on the roof. Plainview volunteer firefighters, with the assistance of several other departments, worked to extinguish the 1:30 p.m. blaze, which caused “substantial damage” to the building, according to police. No injuries were reported.

The Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office, Nassau County Office of Emergency Management, Nassau County Police Arson/Bomb Squad and the Town of Oyster Bay building inspector all responded to the scene to investigate, police said. Those investigations were ongoing.

On Sunday afternoon, the entrance of the self-storage facility was blocked with yellow tape and cones.

A large truck and other vehicles from Servpro, a cleanup and restoration company, were parked in front of the facility as workers walked in and out with brooms, garbage bags and boxes.

An employee with the storage facility declined to comment.

Plainview resident Bob Nevitt, 74, stopped by the site Sunday afternoon to check on his storage unit.

“A gentleman told me it could take some time,” Nevitt said about when he could check on his items. “He couldn’t say how much damage there is to anything.”

Nevitt said he keeps some extra household items like dishes and other overflow in the unit. He was told the roof sustained damage and there was some water damage from the sprinkler system activating due to the fire.

“The gentleman did say it’s likely that the stuff on the floor was damaged," he noted.
