Motorcyclist killed in Rocky Point crash, Suffolk police say
A man in Rocky Point crashed a motorcycle into a tree Monday night and died, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.
The man was driving a 2003 Suzuki southbound on Rocky Point Yaphank Road, between Route 25A and Whiskey Road, when at about 9:35 p.m. he apparently lost control of the motorcycle, left the roadway and struck the tree, the department wrote in a news release.
The release did not say how fast he was going.
The man was declared dead at the scene, the release said. His name and other personal details weren't released.
Statewide, there were 4,921 motorcycle crashes, of which 199 were fatal, according to preliminary figures for 2021 from the Albany-based Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research. In Nassau, there were 280 motorcycle crashes, of which 11 were fatal, and 389 in Suffolk, 20 of which were fatal.
