Byram Hills High boasts 5 Intel semifinalists
In all, 26 high school seniors from 14 Hudson Valley schools are among 300 semifinalists nationwide in what Ossining science research teacher Angelo Piccirillo dubbed the "Super Bowl" of competitions.
With five students recognized in the prestigious 2013 Intel Science Talent Search, Byram Hills High School in Armonk led Hudson Valley schools with the most semifinalists named in the competition.
"It is one of the premier contests," Piccirillo said.
Ossining High School had four students on the semifinalist list. A total of 12 Westchester and two Rockland schools had students who made the list.
At Byram Hills, the recognized projects include Christopher Di Capua's creation of a prototype ventilator to improve CPR and Zachary Blum's investigation of memory loss in aging brains, Byram Hills science research director David Keith said.
The school has a celebration for students who submit to Intel before the semifinalists are even announced, because the criteria to simply have a paper accepted are rigorous, Keith said.
"We've had students jumping for joy just because they've finished the process," Keith said.
Each semifinalist receives $1,000, and earns $1,000 for the school.
On Jan. 23, 40 of the 300 semifinalists will be named finalists, earning them a trip to Washington from March 7 13 to compete for an additional $630,000 in awards.
The year's other major competition -- the Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology -- netted one finalist from the Hudson Valley, Jiayi Peng of Chappaqua. She was among six students nationwide who competed in early December for the $100,000 first prize. Ping won a $50,000 second prize from Siemens and is also a semifinalist in the Intel competition.
