A "back door cold front" was moving through southern Nassau and Western Suffolk Tuesday evening, bringing gusty winds as temperatures fall rapidly from the record 90-plus high Tuesday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

A special weather statement said the front was moving through parts of Long Island through 9:30 p.m., carrying winds of about 30 mph Temperatures were sliding back to the high 50s or low 60s overnight and there is a slight chance of showers.

The rest of the week will stay cooler, including Wednesday, when the peak temperature should be 68 degrees, the weather service said.

The risk of rain remains Wednesday, with a slight chance in the morning, and then a better one in the evening and overnight, although with possible storms, the weather service said.

Thursday looks to be partly sunny, but the chance of showers persists in the morning and evening hours and the high will warm up to 76 degrees, forecasters said.

Showers are considered likely overnight into Friday, with a low of 60, but they should stop Friday morning, when it will go on to be partly sunny with a high of 74, the weather service said.

So far, the weekend looks clear and dry, sunny and in the mid 70s both days.
