A bit of an abbreviated practice today, about an hour and a half, and most of it was off of cards once again. So here’s your abbreviated practice report:

The big news was that Henry Hynoski came off PUP, but he didn’t wind up doing much more than he had been. About the only difference was he was doing it with the rest of the team and not on a field to the side with the other shunned PUPpies....

Justin Tuck: Giants have the talent to be No. 1 defense in the NFL

The Giants' defense was ranked 31st in the NFL last season, but Justin Tuck believes they can do better. About 30 spots better.

“The ceiling is the No.1 defense,” Tuck said Thursday. “That has to be the ceiling. That has to be your thought process. I don’t think anybody in that defensive meeting room can allow themselves to think that we can’t do that.”

That’s a pretty high bar to set,...

When Henry Hynoski underwent knee surgery three months ago, he vowed to do everything he could to return for the start of the regular season. Today he takes a big step towards that accomplishment.

Hynoski has been taken off PUP and will practice with the team for the first time this afternoon. He had been going through some intense running and agility drills over the last few days and this...

Well, training camp 2013 is in the books. The team breaks camp Wednesday and when they arrive for work Thursday, things will be vastly different. Wait, what? They won’t be? Oh. Nevermind then.

The last day of training camp used to be ceremonious, with the Mayor of Albany coming to wave goodbye and the players jumping in their cars for the drive down the Thruway. The Albany 500, we called it....

Antrel Rolle was coy about when he might return to practice, but not what he’ll do when he does.

“You’ll see when I see,” he said. “I don’t know. Whenever I’m out there you’ll know I’m out there. I’ll make a lot of noise.”

Rolle was doing some intense agility drills and running yesterday and looked like he was on the verge of returning. It was last Monday that he sprained his ankle and...

Remember about 20 hours ago when the Giants’ offensive line had a new look? Scratch that one.

The Giants will return to the lab to concoct another five-man compound on their offensive line after veteran tackle-turned-guard David Diehl was diagnosed with instability in his right thumb which will require surgery. Diehl will be out for six weeks, meaning that another gap on the line must be filled.

Practice report: Debut of new O-line, Eli hits Randle twice, Rolle coming along

Justin Pugh, right, looks to block linebacker Keith

There wasn’t much in the way of live action at today’s practice as most of it was done off cards. But that doesn’t mean there wasn’t news.

For instance, we saw the new shape of the Giants’ offensive line for the first time. With David Baas out for a few weeks, the team decided to make three moves to replace him. They shifted Kevin Boothe from left guard to center, moved David Diehl from right...

Giants seem to be shuffling their line to replace David Baas

It looks like Justin Pugh will be part of the reconfigured offensive line that deals with the absence of David Baas for the next few weeks.

Pugh’s agent tweeted out congratulations to his client this afternoon, saying that Pugh had been named a starter. While the Giants have not made that or any decision official, it seems likely that they will move Kevin Boothe from left guard to center,...

Aaron Ross laughs off blooper-reel play that led to TD

Aaron Ross was able to laugh it off, but only because it didn’t really count.

“It’s one of those plays that you want to happen in the preseason and not the regular season,” he said.

Ross nearly came up with an easy interception after Andrew Luck’s pass for Reggie Wayne was a good seven yards short of its target (thanks to a quarterback hit by Keith Rivers).

“I saw when the ball...

Practice report: Donnell goes down, good news on JPP, and a fight on the last play

Giants tight end Larry Donnell practices during team

(Credit: James Escher)

Well, I don’t think THAT was scripted on the scouting cards.

Most of practice was played off of the diagrams that the coaches make up to prepare for the upcoming opponent, so there was very little in the way of live action. Guys were playing hard and there were some interesting things to note, but most of it was just working on fits and placements in shells.

Until …

Practice ended...
