The two Melville-based companies were listed at Nos. 203 and 464, respectively, out of 500 employers chosen.

The nation's top 10 employers were: Google, Costco Wholesale, Marathon Petroleum Corp., The Container Store, L.L. Bean, Baxter International, BMW Group, Shaw Industries, Wegmans Food Markets and Harley-Davidson Motor Co.

The top New York State employer was Rochester-based supermarket chain Wegmans, ranking at No. 9 overall, followed by the New York City Fire Department at No. 17. The leading New York State educational institutions were Syracuse University at No. 41 and Columbia University at No. 52. New York City's Con Edison was the only utility company to make the national list.

Forbes polled more than 20,000 U.S. workers at companies, not-for-profits and government agencies with at least 2,500 employees to rate how likely they would be to recommend their employers and other employers in their industry on a scale of 0-10. The list appears in Forbes' April 13 issue.
