Buying in: Stewart Manor, a small Nassau County village
Stewart Manor covers just 0.2 square miles in the center of Nassau County, but agent Claudia Galvin of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty describes it as a “self-contained village” that is also “charming” and “delightful.”
Stewart Manor has its own Village Court, Fire Department, board of trustees and Department of Public Works — as well as a small shopping district on Covert Avenue where Galvin says you can find almost anything you need, from a butcher, deli, pharmacy and Laundromat to gift shops and fine jewelers.

THE SCOOP
Stewart Manor covers just 0.2 square miles in the center of Nassau County, but agent Claudia Galvin of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty describes it as a “self-contained village” that is also “charming” and “delightful.”
Stewart Manor has its own Village Court, Fire Department, board of trustees and Department of Public Works — as well as a small shopping district on Covert Avenue where Galvin says you can find almost anything you need, from a butcher, deli, pharmacy and Laundromat to gift shops and fine jewelers.
There are very few homes on the market at any given time, Galvin says, because people who move there tend to stay there. She says the community is a mixture of older residents who remained after buying a home there years ago and young families who will renovate their houses to suit their needs rather than move.
Town of Hempstead communications director Mike Deery cites Stewart Manor’s location as another reason it’s a great place to live. Deery says the train station and the shops on Covert Avenue are “easily walkable from almost every house in the village.” It’s also close to the city line and many major thoroughfares.
Stewart Manor clerk-treasurer Rosemarie Biehayn describes the community as “a small, friendly, walking village . . . where everyone knows everyone.” She cites the Stewart Manor Community Pool as the village’s central gathering place and standout attraction, playing host to ice cream sundae parties, movie and family nights, senior teas and an event known as the Pool Olympics.
Other village traditions like the tree lighting, Easter egg hunt and the Halloween parade, Biehayn says, have been treasured by Stewart Manor families that have roots there for generations.
