Letterman to Regis: 'Putting shards back together...'
David Letterman on "Live with Regis and Kelly" just now, and it was quite a conversation. Dave never does interviews - or rarely - though he made this appearance for an old and beloved pal.
He said much, but his comments on the big scandal are most noteworthy. These are the first public comments he's made since the incredible tale of blackmail, infidelity and office shenigans that stretch back decades. They sent one man to jail, perhaps ruined the life of a young woman, and nearly derailed an incredible career. Of course, he addressed it all a couple times on his own show, and then pretty much said - over. Never again. I'm through talking.
But just a few minutes ago, Reeg asked gently about his recent travails, and the impact on his personal life - read between lines, he was asking about his marriage. Said Dave:
"I don't know if people know this but I've had some trouble. When something like this happens, and mostly it was reckless behavior on my part, and if you behave recklessly, there's just one thing you can do in that circumstance. It was not a tragedy, it was just stupidity. We all know what's tragedy and what's horrifying and scarring. We all know what we're talking about [and] it wasn't that, thank God, but stupid behavior. And you take a look at that explosion and it just knocks you down when you wake up in the morning; you're scarred and depressed and sad. You get up and let that knock you down, then you gotta start knocking that down."
"I looked at the shards and said, can we put this back together again? And by God, maybe you can put it back together. It won't be the same, but maybe it will be better. You can only do that with the help of your friends. So right now, we're putting it back together, and will see if is is viable, or will it be satisfying..."
