A new acting class called “Monologue and Scene Study” is being offered for children ages 7 to 11 at The Ballet Center in Ronkonkoma.

Students will work on monologues and will study character development using specific scenes from plays, says Debra Punzi, artistic director at The Ballet Center. Exercises are used to help actors dive into a character’s physical and emotional life, and personal, thorough and supportive critiques are given about each individual’s work.

“This is great for any kids who are looking to do acting as a hobby or as a profession. Usually when you go to audition, you have to present a monologue,” Punzi says. The center has offered such training as part of its summer camp program, but this is the first time it’s being offered as an after-school class during the academic year, Punzi says.

Class for ages 9 to 11 are at 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays beginning this week; class for ages 7 to 10 are at 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Cost is $20 per class or $58 per calendar month. Students can attend as often as they wish, but they should register in advance because each session is limited to 15 students, Punzi says.

Classes are at The Ballet Center, 1863 Pond Rd., Ronkonkoma. For more information or to register, call 631-737-1964 or visit theballetcenter.org.
