LIRR to begin enforcing no-smoking ban

Enforcement of a no-smoking ban will begin Wednesday on platforms and outdoor boarding areas and terminals of the Long Island Rail Road, the MTA said Monday.
The law banning smoking in those areas was signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in August and took effect in November, but the Metropolitan Transportation Authority had delayed enforcement as it conducted a public education campaign.

That campaign included fliers placed on train seats, posting of bright-white "No Smoking" signs and public address announcements featuring the voices of Jets legend Joe Namath and others.
The MTA said the ban would be enforced by MTA police and a summons will carry a fine of up to $50 and up to 30 days in jail, or both.
