Bloomberg to head to Congress to lobby for president's gun control plan

Mayor Mike Bloomberg said he's pleased that President Barack Obama put forward specific plans Wednesday to curb gun violence and that he will make sure other national leaders follow suit.

Bloomberg, who is the co-chair of the coalition Mayors Against Guns, announced Wednesday that he and his group will be in Washington, D.C. tomorrow to lobby Congressional members to pass Obama's $500 million legislative package.

The mayor, who repeatedly criticized Obama during the election season for failing to take serious steps to crack down on illegal guns, said a ban on assault rifles and universal background checks are common sense resolutions to the rise in shootings across the country.

"Today it's clear the president and vice president heard the majority of the people," Bloomberg said.

The mayor said he will remind Congressional members that the president's ideas don't compromise the Second Amendment.

The NRA already hit the airwaves to make their case with a television ad that criticized Obama for not pushing laws that would arm guards in schools.
