Dead men tell no tales, but do they cash checks?

The city has uncovered a large-scale pension-fraud scam, in which crooks cashed pension checks written to people who have died, the comptroller’s office said yesterday.

In 14 cases of the con from 2007 to 2009, criminals ripped off almost half a million dollars.

“Fraud and waste anywhere in city government cannot and should not be tolerated,” Comptroller John Liu said in a statement.

The comptroller’s office found an additional 171 cases of pension checks that were issued to dead people between 2007 and 2009, totaling nearly $2 million.
