Belted flannel coats over pencil skirts gave way to flashier embellished blouses paired with wool trousers, while luxe accents such as a velvet belt or a caplet collar gave the garments some oomph.

Other designers may have doled out candy, but our Valentine’s Day treat came in the form of Carolina Herrera’s fall 2011 show.

After last season's Asian excursion, the designer returned to her roots, showcasing a succession of day and evening looks that defined elegance and grace. Belted flannel coats over pencil skirts gave way to flashier embellished blouses paired with wool trousers, while luxe accents such as a velvet belt or a caplet collar gave the garments some oomph.

The designer's signature sweeping silk skirts and evening gowns drew audible gasps when the models emerged swathed in silk chiffon, organza and jacquard numbers, many designed in a minty turquoise and cocoa palette.

This collection was a master class in chic, timeless sophistication.
