Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine apologized Monday to third baseman Kevin Youkilis after saying the three-time All-Star wasn't as "physically or emotionally into the game as he has been in the past" in a TV interview on Sunday.

But he was publicly rebuked by second baseman Dustin Pedroia.

"I really don't know what Bobby is trying to do," Pedroia told reporters before Boston lost 1-0 to Tampa Bay Monday. "That's not the way we go about our stuff around here."

Youkilis didn't understand the comments either.

"Everyone here knows I go out and play with emotion," Youkilis told reporters.
