Long Island weather: Sunny and a bit warm for this time of year

Long Islanders should get to enjoy two more days of clear or mostly clear skies before heavy clouds and rain move in.

The National Weather Service said Monday evening that Tuesday will be sunny on Long Island with a high temperature near 46 degrees, which would be above the average high for the date in Islip of 39 degrees.

A northwest wind is expected to blow Tuesday at 8 to 13 mph.

A high-pressure system was expected to build in from the west Monday night with clear skies and a continued northwesterly flow, according to an area forecast by the weather service.

"This shortwave [trough] will have limited moisture to work with, but will increase middle and high clouds Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday night," the forecast continued.

Tuesday night is expected to be partly cloudy with a low of around 28 degrees.

Wednesday should be mostly sunny but it is predicted to become mostly cloudy in the evening.

Thursday is also expected to be mostly cloudy before rain is forecast for Thursday night. The chance of precipitation is pegged at 90%.

There is a 70% chance of rain on Friday and a 40% chance on Saturday.

High daytime temperatures will be near 41 degrees Wednesday, 51 degrees Thursday, 53 degrees Friday and 44 degrees Saturday, the weather service said.
