Long Island weather: Sunny start to Sunday with chance of showers

While Sunday is expected to start sunny, it also brings a chance of rain across Long Island, particularly headed east toward the North and South forks, with strong wind gusts possible, forecasters said Saturday. 

One day after scattered thunderstorms occurred Saturday midafternoon on parts of Long Island, an isolated strong to severe thunderstorm also is possible Sunday afternoon, with the main threats being strong wind gusts and small hail, according to the National Weather Service. 

Thunderstorms were reported between 3:30 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. Saturday along the South Shore. Hail of roughly 1.25 inches was reported in parts of Farmingdale, forecasters said, with brief heavy rain and wind damage in several areas along the South Shore. 

"The primary threats are large hail and damaging winds," the National Weather Service said. "All thunderstorms will be capable of producing frequent lightning."

Strong winds on Saturday caused parts of a roof to blow off at a truck repair shop in West Babylon, officials said.

Joseph Iuzzini, chief of the East Farmingdale Volunteer Fire Company, said firefighters went to the shop at 191 Cabot St. about 4:50 p.m. There were no injuries, Iuzzini said.

The fire marshal and building inspector were on scene Saturday about 7:15 p.m. while the inspection was ongoing, Iuzzini said.

Temperatures in Islip reached a high of 91 degrees, the National Weather Service said. 

Sunday will have a 30 to 50 percent chance of rain, with the chances higher traveling east toward the North and South forks, the NWS said. There is a slight chance of thunderstorms across the Island and winds are expected to come in from the northeast at 25 to 30 mph.
