Long Island weather: High winds for Wednesday

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for Long Island for Wednesday afternoon and into the evening.

"A strong cold front will bring gusty winds to the Tri-State area Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday evening. Winds are expected to gust up to 45-55 mph, which could result in a few downed trees and power lines," the advisory said. "Winds will then diminish during the day on Thursday. "

There is also a 20% chance of showers on and off Wednesday afternoon and evening, accompanying the winds, the weather service said. Otherwise it will be sunny with a high of 75 degrees.

And then look for another sunny stretch through the weekend, though it will be cooler with temperatures bouncing around the mid-60s until Sunday, when thermometers could rise to 71 degrees, the weather service said.

Monday’s Columbus Day holiday, however, should be bright and cooler, with a high for the day of 64 degrees.

Still, that is well above the average temperature for the month of 54.3 degrees, aording to weather service records in Islip that began in 1963.
