Yankees GM Brian Cashman spoke to Erik Boland yesterday.

Here's the money quote:

"We don't have to win these series at all costs," Cashman said by phone Thursday. "We're in this thing to win a World Series. Our focus is a World Series, not 10 years from now being known as division champions. If you're not World Series champions, nothing else matters. Nobody really remembers."

I would argue that winning the division is important. You want homefield advantage in the playoffs. I'd be surprised if that's not the Yankees' goal right now. Win the division, gain homefield advantage and then worry about the division series.

The Yankees have lost eight of their last 10 overall and five of six on this current road trip. The neext stop is Baltimore. It's a huge series against the last-place O's. It's a huge momentum builder for next week since the Tampa Bay Rays come to town for four games next week and then it's Boston for three games next weekend.

Plus, we'll get a look at Andy Pettitte this weekend, with the lefthander scheduled to start on Sunday. That's also a huge part of this weekend. The Yankees need to solidify the starting rotation heading down the stretch.
