When the Rangers decided not to place Sean Avery, currently with the AHL Connecticut Whale,  on re-entry waivers before the Feb. 27 trade deadline, which would have allowed another team to claim him, (the Rangers would have picked up some of his salary), the die was cast.

Then yesterday, Avery, who was sent to the minors on Dec. 31, was not included on the Whale's "clear" list, which makes players eligible for the playoffs.

Avery had some injuries---and issues with the Whale.  He played just seven games, and was 2-1-3. So, it's officially over.  Perhaps he'll get a fresh start next season elsewhere.
