A Freeport man was charged Wednesday with leaving the scene of an accident in connection with the death of a woman struck in North Lawrence in December, Nassau police said.

Melvin Deleon, 35, was arrested Wednesday in the death of Esmeralda Larios-Perez, 34, on Dec. 12, Nassau police said in a news release. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.

Larios-Perez, of Inwood, was crossing Burnside Avenue walking north at Washington Place at 7:22 p.m. when she was struck by vehicle that failed to stop. She suffered severe trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Deleon was scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday at First District Court in Hempstead but no arraignment or attorney information was available online Wednesday evening.

Larios-Perez was one of two women killed in separate incidents on Dec. 12 walking across Nassau County roads, just hours apart, Nassau police said.

At 6:04 p.m., Marie Gigliotti, 75, was crossing Marcus Avenue at Pubins Lane in Garden City Park when she was struck by a 2020 Jeep Wrangler, driven by a 26-year-old woman.

Gigliotti, of New Hyde Park, was then hit by a 2008 Honda Civic being operated by a 23-year-old man. She suffered severe trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene by a member of the Garden City Fire Department, police said.
