An Elmont man was arrested late Sunday on a drunken driving charge after he was involved in a car accident on the Southern Parkway in North Bellmore and fled on foot, police said.
Angelo Graci, 61, "was operating a BMW when he struck a Lexus from behind" at 10:45 p.m. on the westbound parkway near Exit 25N, Newbridge Road, State Police said in Monday news release.
The unidentified driver of the Lexus and two passengers were treated for nonlife threatening injuries at Nassau University Medical Center. Police did not disclose the extent of their injuries.
Troopers who responded to the scene saw Graci "fleeing on foot northbound on Newbridge Road," police said. "Troopers were able to apprehend him without incident."
Having detected a strong odor of alcohol, troopers conducted sobriety tests that the suspect failed, police said.
Graci's blood-alcohol content was .22 percent, police said. A blood-alcohol reading of 0.08 percent while driving is illegal. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, driving while intoxicated and traffic violations. The timetable for his arraignment at First District Court in Hempstead was not immediately clear.
