A 38-year-old Bay Shore man was arrested and charged with first-degree robbery and second-degree assault Thursday in connection with an attack on a woman left seriously injured on the side of the Southern State Parkway.

The woman, whose identity was not released, was found along the parkway at Exit 37 in West Babylon on Monday evening by state troopers responding to a 911 call. Police said the woman had been "violently assaulted," but they did not detail the injuries she had sustained.

Police also did not release the time of the incident.

Police said the woman had been assaulted and robbed and left by the side of the parkway by Antoine Smiley, who already was on parole. Police did not release any information regarding Smiley's record.

The two, who know each other, were arguing on the roadway of the exit, said Eli Roman, the State Police investigator on the case.

Several motorists on the parkway called 911 after seeing a man assaulting a woman, he said, and when the suspect noticed the motorists had gotten out of their vehicles, he ran away, leaving behind a Dodge Aspen.

The victim has injuries consistent with road rash, Roman said, and investigators are trying to determine if she was pushed out of the Dodge.

Roman declined to release other details, citing the ongoing investigation.

It also was not immediately clear what led police to Smiley.

Smiley was arrested by the U.S. Marshal's Office Regional Fugitive Task Force with assistance from the Violent Felony Warrant Squad. Arraignment details were not immediately available Friday.

Police said the investigation is continuing and anyone with information regarding Smiley or the alleged crime is being asked to call troopers at 631-231-6389.
