A Central Islip man who robbed a Smithtown bank nearly four years ago and never returned home was arrested Thursday after detectives discovered his current residence, Suffolk police said.

Carey Peguese, 37, had avoided arrest by never going back to his home, in Centereach at the time, after he held up the TD Bank on Smithtown Bypass Aug. 26, 2010, police said. During the robbery, a dye pack concealed among the cash exploded, police said, and Peguese dropped the money before running off.

He had been last seen heading toward the rear of Famous Dave's Restaurant, which was next to the bank, police said.

"Peguese never returned to his residence after the robbery to avoid capture," police said Thursday in a news release.

Detectives from the pattern crimes unit discovered Peguese was living in Central Islip and arrested him just after noon.

Peguese, of Weeks Avenue, was charged with third-degree robbery and is scheduled to be arraigned Friday at First District Court in Central Islip.
