A car being driven by an on-duty Suffolk County police detective struck a van that had stopped in the HOV lane of the Long Island Expressway in Medford, police said.
The accident occurred at 7:56 p.m. Tuesday in the westbound lanes between exits 64 and 63, causing lane closures for about three hours, officials said.

A car being driven by an on-duty Suffolk County police detective struck a van that had stopped in the HOV lane of the Long Island Expressway in Medford, police said.
The accident occurred at 7:56 p.m. Tuesday in the westbound lanes between exits 64 and 63, causing lane closures for about three hours, officials said.
The detective, driving a 2010 Ford sedan, and the driver of the stopped 2006 Toyota van were taken to hospitals for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening, Suffolk County police said.
It was not known why the driver of the van had stopped.
